THAD JONES – THE MAGNIFICENT THAD JONES
Thad Jones' name was on the rise in 1956, after having been in bands with Charles Mingus and Count Basie. With the release of 'The Magnificent Thad Jones' his name was finally established, because the record is not called 'Magnificent' for nothing.
It is the best work he has ever made. Not only because he is in top form himself, but he has also gathered exactly the right band members around him; the relatively unknown saxophonist Billy Mitchell, pianist Barry Harris, Percy Heath on bass, indomitable force on drums Max Roach and a guest role for guitarist Kenny Burrell. The centrepiece of 'Magnificent' is the 11-minute post-bop epic 'Thedia' which, in 1956, was far ahead of its time. Five stars, praise and tribute.
