When avant-prog band Black Midi called it quits in 2024, bassist Cameron Picton's greatest desire was to make a singer-songwriter album. That didn't quite work out. The self-titled debut from My New Band Believe is indeed fully acoustic (and Picton proves to be a very gifted lyricist) – yet it (fortunately) still goes in a thousand directions. Chamber pop adventures are interspersed with psychedelic excursions where a full orchestra sometimes appears out of nowhere.
