Mark Pritchard & Thom Yorke - Tall Tales (CD)

Thom Yorke has never been a warm personality on record . In the last six years or so, "cool-blooded" might even be the best work to describe the music he's playing under his own name. The Radiohead frontman's collaboration with techno producer Mark Pritchard reaches a new pinnacle in this regard. Tall Tales is emphatically a Pritchard-with-Yorke record, not the other way around. The former paves a path of icy beats, long stretches of uncanny ambient, occasionally some chilly strings, or evil spirits from a box. Yorke then wanders vocally over it all, sometimes in a barely audible falsetto à la Suspiria , sometimes with a new kind of staccato sprechgesang . That it initially leaves you unmoved is perhaps the intention, but just as on 'Dawn Chorus' a few years ago, everything shifts within. Physically released with a book to frame every page of.
