The spirit of Elliott Smith still lingers. Apparently, it has now gotten a hold of Greg Mendez. The singer-songwriter from Philadelphia strums casually, as if he just came up with the songs (rarely longer than two minutes). But the vocal melodies, especially, are too good for that to be true. Mendez doesn't need much more than that on Beauty Land, his first record on the renowned Dead Oceans (Phoebe Bridgers, Wednesday, Kevin Morby).
