Elliott Smith's ghost still lingers. Apparently, it has now gotten a hold of Greg Mendez . The singer-songwriter from Philadelphia strums casually, as if he just came up with the songs (rarely longer than two minutes). But the vocal melodies, in particular, are far too good for that. Mendez doesn't need much more than that on Beauty Land, his debut album on the acclaimed Dead Oceans label (Phoebe Bridgers, Wednesday, Kevin Morby).
