Anyone who 's ever seen Dry Cleaning live must have been amazed by the bassist. Lewis Maynard plays with sweeping strokes, as if he were in a George Clinton tribute band. It's a stark contrast to Florence Shaw's shy, eloquent vocals—a contrast that's further explored on " Secret Love ." Under the tutelage of producer Cate Le Bon (recently also responsible for albums by Horsegirl and Wilco), the London post-punk band sounds a bit more erratic than on the four-year-old Stumpwork . Shaw's lyrics remain the focal point, as on the rather dryly humorous "Cruise Ship Designer," but there are also more instrumental adventures to be had.
