Miles Davis was already well on his way to Columbia Records when the bosses at 'indie label' Prestige reminded him that he still owed them four albums. So Davis gathered his first quintet, consisting of John Coltrane, Red Garland, Paul Chambers, and Philly Joe Jones, and in just two sessions recorded enough material for Cookin’, Relaxin’, Workin’ and Steamin’. It was also enough for Prestige to create a beautiful box set seventy years later: Miles '56. At no point is the quintet here trying to record something grand: all five play as if they have parked themselves in an armchair in Rudy Van Gelder's studio. And yet, it never sounds like they are taking it easy. It was precisely with this kind of apparent nonchalance that Davis and co excelled back then.
