Jeff Parker has the wind in his sails. The 59-year-old guitarist was long primarily known as a key figure in the Chicago school and as a co-founder of the band Tortoise. Now, Parker is far too busy to tour with Tortoise anymore: for a few years, he has been one of the most prominent and sought-after names in the Californian jazz scene. For example, Parker and his bandmates (Josh Johnson, Anna Butterss, and Jay Bellerose) played a starring role earlier this year on Flea's solo debut Honora. The latest album by the Jeff Parker ETA IVtet, Happy Today, shows that the magic has not worn off: the two sides, both improvisations, were recorded live. It sometimes reminds one of Mingus in slow-motion, or an archetypal ECM ensemble without the understated perfectionism. The ETA IVtet plays without haste and without showing off, but every time another band member calmly steps into the spotlight, you feel the euphoria in the room.
